What to Look For in an Ashwagandha Supplement?

There are so many ahswagandha supplements available today that it can be quite hard to choose which one to buy.

Ashwagandha supplements are typically made from the roots of the plant. These roots are harvested, grounded into fine powder, and packaged into capsules.

How do you know if your supplement is free from heavy metals and other environmental pollutants?  First off - look for certified organic supplements. It is also a good sign if the manufacturer can show that their facilities are in compliance with GMP standards.

If possible, choose a manufacturer that sends every batch of their products for testing into third party, independent laboratories. 

These laboratories usually screen for heavy metals, pesticides and solvent residuals, aflatoxins, and microbiological pathogens (for example bacteria, such as Salmonella and E. Coli).

If the test results are consistently within the acceptable limits (or even below detection levels), you can be fairly sure that the supplement is safe to take.

2. In Order to be Effective the Supplement Needs to Contain Enough Active Ingredients

Ashwagandha has plenty of proven health benefits. These benefits come from the active ingredients in the root, which include alkaloids, saponins, and  withanolides.  

When you are reading the label on the supplement package, you should look beyond the amount of the ashwagandha powder per serving.

The thing that is most relevant is the percentage of active ingredients. Typically, you will see written something like: 'standardized to min X percent of withanolides'.

3. Find Supplements that are Low on Fillers and Additives

Stay away from supplements that have words like 'other ingredients' cited on the label. It is best if you know exactly what you are taking – especially if you are planning to take a supplement on the long term. Minimize fillers and additives since they don't bring any added value, while being potentially harmful to health.

    Dear Sir,

    I am consuming Ashwagandharishtam Special (Liquid) of Baidyanath since last one & half month. 3 Table spoon with the mixture of same qty of water daily morning and night.

    I wanted to clear below 2 points.

    1. I am consuming this without any Medical prescription. One of my colleague has adviced me to take this. Can I continue with this.
    2. From somewhere I had heard that most of the Ayurveda products are made with the Lead in it which is very harmful for kidneys.

    Is Ashwagandharishtam Special (Liquid) of Baidyanath is free from Lead. Or how much safe it is to consume.

  • Ashwagandharistam Liquid and lead problem

    Ashwagandharishta is a liquid preparation of ashwagandha, which is dissolved into a mixture of water and alcoholol.  

    In Ayurveda, typically only rasa preparations contain lead and other heavy metals that are used for enhancing the effects of herbs. So, rishta liquid should be free from lead.

    Question. My daughter is a young athlete, high level for her age. She's 11 years & 5 months old right now. Is it safe for her to take the Ashwagandha Organic Root Powder? No side effects? Thank you.

  • Athletic performance and ashwagandha

    Athletes take ashwagandha for improving cardiorespiratory endurance, muscle strength and shorten recovery time after exercise.

    Positive effects of ashwagandha on athletic performance have been confirmed by several studies; however, all the studies made in young athletes were relatively short term (4-12 weeks). So, basically, no study examined long term effects of ashwagandha in this group.

    In general, ashwagandha is well tolerated and doesn't seem to have negative side effects when taken in the usual doses (even on the long term). Some people experience stomach upset. If this happens, it helps if you take it with meals.

    When ashwagandha is taken by a child, it is always best if this is done under supervision from a qualified health professional.

  • Helps anxiety

    You are right: ashwagandha is really helpful for anxiety. I have had terrible anxiety for the past five years and have tried nearly everything. It wasn't until I found and tried ashwagandha that I noticed a huge difference.
