Popular Resveratrol Supplements

There are many resveratrol supplements on the market. Find out what to look for when choosing a resveratrol supplement. Also, take a look at an overview of the most popular resveratrol supplements.

How to Read the Label

Trans-Resveratrol Content

The most important thing to look for is how much trans-resveratrol is within the resveratrol supplement.

Resveratrol comes in two molecular forms: cis-resveratrol and trans-resveratrol.

Trans-resveratrol is the one, which is biologically more active. This is the form of resveratrol that has been studied in clinical studies and offers the most health benefits. Trans-resveratrol changes to cis form when exposed to light, heat, or oxygen.

You need to check the label for a phrase that sounds something like: 'standardized to contain a minimum of .... mg of trans-resveratrol' or 'total resveratrol content'.

Be wary of products that are not able to list the exact amount of pure trans resveratrol in the supplement.

Source of Resveratrol in the Supplement

Even though red grapes and red wine are the most famous source of resveratrol they are typically not used for making resveratrol supplements. The reason for this is that they are fairly expensive.

Resveratrol supplements are usually made from Japanese knotweed, which is also called Polygonum cuspidatum or Fallopia japonica.  That is why you will typically see Polygonum cuspidatum extract listed on the label.

Other ingredients

Some supplements also contain other ingredients besides resveratrol. Most commonly they include red grape skin extract or seed extract (vitis vinifera extract). These extracts are mainly added as a source of other polyphenols, which act synergistically with resveratrol.
